  • Access points obtaining IP addresses on incorrect subnets.
  • Devices being stranded without proper VLAN tagging.
  1. Firewall Exclusion Rule Missing: 

  On the Guest SSID, DHCP errors persisted due to a missing exclusion rule in the firewall’s DHCP scope. This resulted in duplicate IP addresses, causing devices to route incorrectly. 

  1. Legacy Wireless Controller Conflicts: 

  Legacy infrastructure still connected to the network created conflicts, with devices unintentionally associating with outdated wireless controllers. 

  1. Switch Port Security Limitations: 

  Strict switch port security settings (MAC address limits of 3 per port) caused additional devices to be dropped. This severely hindered access point functionality, as the AP alone consumed one of the slots.

  • Corrected switch ports to trunk mode. 
  • Ensured all relevant VLANs were tagged to allow proper traffic routing for the connected devices. 
  • Cross-checked configurations to standardize port behavior.

2. Resolving Firewall DHCP Scope Error: 

  The DHCP scope for the Guest SSID issued conflicting IP addresses by assigning the gateway as a usable IP address. This created duplicate IP conflicts and routing failures. 

  Solution: 

  • Updated the DHCP scope on the firewall to exclude the gateway IP address. 
  • Validated that subsequent devices received unique, conflict-free IPs.

3. Eliminating Legacy Wireless Controller Conflicts: 

  Although the legacy wireless controller should have been decommissioned, residual connectivity conflicts arose as devices still attempted to associate with it. This created interference on certain SSIDs. 

  Solution: 

  • Disabled the switch ports connected to the legacy wireless controller. 
  • Confirmed device associations exclusively involved Mist access points. 

4. Adjusting Switch Port Security Settings: 

  Strict MAC address limitation settings on switch ports rendered the access points ineffective, as client devices beyond the first two connections were denied access. 

  Solution: 

  • Removed MAC address restrictions on switch ports connected to access points. 
  • Verified successful connection of multiple devices through the Mist dashboard.
